Evercreech Walking Group

Autumn/Winter 2018

What an amazing warm sunny summer we have had for walking this year. The all-day walk in May to East Pennard and Pylle was an extremely hot one, with the last couple of miles back from Pylle across fields with knee high grass, very hard going after having already walked ten miles. It’s hard to believe when the previous months walk from Croscombe to Dinder Wood was just about the muddiest one I can remember.

The Walking Group ventured further afield in September, with ten of the group spending a long weekend in Appledore, North Devon. We arrived on Friday afternoon, checked in and got straight out on the first walk, a short one along Northam Burrows getting the weekend off to a good start. We didn’t know we had arrived during the Appledore Book Festival and spent most breakfasts “celebrity” spotting, Jeremy Vine, Anthony Horowitz, Patrick Gale and Kate Morton were some we could recognise.

During Saturday’s walk we experienced plenty of rain, but didn’t let it dampen our spirits. However, after 7 miles we were glad to return to our warm and dry hotel.  Sunday’s walk gave us wind, beautiful sunshine and spectacular views across Putsborough and Woolacombe Bays as we walked along the South West Coast Path.

We finished off the weekend with a visit to Arlington Court the National Trust property, before leaving for our journey home.

Dates for Autumn/Winter:

5th November Creech Hill and Lamyatt.

3rd December Circular walk from West Horrington followed by lunch at The Cheese Yard Café.

7th January     Circular walk to Ditcheat.

4th February    Chesterblade, Prestleigh and Bagborough

6th March        Catch bus to Shepton Mallet, walk back via Chelynch and Cranmore.

1st April          Spargrove, Westcombe, Higher Alham, Small Down Knoll

All walks start from Evercreech Village Hall at 10am on the first Monday of each month and everyone is welcome to join us. This time of year is it worth being prepared for the weather so it is advisable to wear walking boots if you have them and bring wet weather gear too.

Please bring along your bus pass if you have one, or money, as we occasionally catch the bus to the start or back from our walks. Walks usually last between 2 to 3 hours, sometimes a little longer depending on the route we take, or if we find a coffee stop.

Thank you to everyone who has joined me on the walks, I hope you will continue to support the group. We are a friendly bunch so come and join us, everyone is welcome and it’s a great way to enjoy the countryside and get fit.
