History Society

This society covers Stoney Stratton, Chesterblade and Milton Clevedon as well as Evercreech.

To start their new season of meetings twenty members of
The Evercreech and District Local History Society went to the recently re-opened Rural Life Museum at Glastonbury. They had a fascinating guided tour before getting together over tea and cakes. The Museum is a must for anyone who loves Somerset and its history.

Our November speaker is Steve Tofts who will be speaking about “Animals in Archaeology” and the human society they lived beside. The date for this is 21st November.

We have a break in December, but on 16th January we welcome Robert Musgrave who will tell us the “Stories behind Inn Signs”.  A good subject after Jane Burgess’s work on local Pubs and Ale houses in the Parish. Jane’s book has now been published.

In February we have Simon Armstrong who is from Wells Cathedral Stonemasons and will talk about “The History of Stonemasonry”.

This brings us round to our AGM on the 20th March, when Gill Lindsay will take the Chair and I’m sure it will be an interesting evening.  Gill has published a booklet all about the “History of the Methodist Chapel”, well worth a read.  Also, Gill is working to revise and re-issue “Education in Evercreech” first published in 2003, in time for the 25th anniversary of the new school.

All our meetings start at 7.30 pm in the main room of the Village Hall. Anyone interested in local history will be most welcome to join us.

There is a charge of £3 to hear a good speaker and light refreshments afterwards.
